I’m on a Podcast!

My good friend and fellow weirdo artist, Sara Century interviewed me a few weeks back about the future under a Donald Trump administration, music, film, art, and books. It came out today on the lovely Undressing Underground podcast. Take a listen!

My Top 5 Cassette Tapes of 2016

The dual cassette player that my father had given me in 1988 finally ate its last tape and I decided to retire it in 2014. After two years of looking a replacement, this spring I finally found one so 2016 became my year of the cassette.

Though I bought a few records this year, I spent most of my time going through my tape collection. To my surprise and embarrassment, I owned way more cassettes than I thought I did and even today, I still have a few I bought at shows a few years back that I need to take a decent listen to.

So here are the tapes that I listened to the most in 2016:

  1. Human Story 3 by James Ferraro

It had been years since I checked up on the career of James Ferraro. I had been a fan of his band SK8TERS after hearing their album at my friend Katherine’s house one stoney afternoon. It was one of those records that made me sit up and ask, “What the hell is this?” And then spend weeks on EBay tracking down a copy. It was well worth it. I still enjoy that album to this day.

At that time I looked into to what he was doing and it was cool electronic stuff but nothing I was interested at the time too much. When I found his Soundcloud account this summer I was stunned. In the years since I had listened to him last, he’d pretty much put out an album a year. The best part was that most of them were really good. I especially enjoyed his latest release, “Human Story 3”.

At first, I just loved the pun of the album title but for most of my humdrum summer work life I listened to that album over and over again. Eventually I hunted down the tape on discogs and began laying on my apartment floor at night after I got off work listening to it once.

It’s kind of a “modern” classical album crafted on a computer with some assistance by the University of Santa Barbara Choir. Every now and then a computer voice pops in like some overhead announcement at a mall speaking in a calm tone about Ikea or Prius or Market Crash.

The whole album is very soothing and calm but there’s this doomish banality of evil hidden down there, like some kind of disquiet right below the surface. Mr. Ferraro’s stylistic tastes veer from the minimalist school to the Nature Shop to touches of harsh serialism. This combined with the consumeristic vision of our computer narrator make it both a musically adventurous album and at times a philosophical head trip through the troubling culture of middle class America.

  1. Killers by Iron Maiden

I was forbidden by my parents from owning any Iron Maiden or Black Sabbath music when I was in my early teens and by the time I could buy whatever I wanted I was more interested in folk music, punk and jazz than metal (it was the late 80’s and everyone was kind of sick of metal). I eventually discovered my deep love for Black Sabbath in my twenties but still forgot about Maiden.

This summer I made a bunch of lathe cuts for a metal band out of Albuquerque. The whole album was covers and one of the songs really stood out to me. I asked the band and they said it was from the Iron Maiden album Killers.

Bought a copy the next day and wow, I was really happy to listen to that thing over and over again. I know I’m late to the game about this but if you’re like me and haven’t listened to Iron Maiden then I highly suggest taking a gander at Killers. It’s a pretty great record!

  1. Halloween III Soundtrack by John Carpenter and Alan Hovarth

Don’t get the MP3 of this album, it is a terrible transfer. Buy the record or the cassette. I was a little broke with the record came out so I bought the tape. I have the MP3 version and it has some problems with weird silent gaps at the end of songs. The tape is perfect though!

One of the best soundtracks Mr. Carpenter made and one of the creepiest instrumental synth albums ever.

  1. Necrotic Doom by Spectral Voice

I’m not too good at pegging down genres these days (there’s so many!!!) so I don’t know if this is black metal or doom or something else. I can tell you that it is a kick ass album in the area of dirge guitar, lo-fi throaty vocals and drums that never stop. Plus the dudes in this band are some of the nicest people I’ve met.

I’ve been listening to this one on and off for the entire last year. Never gets dull and makes me cheery at the end of shitty days. Highly recommended!

  1. The Great Panic by Puce Mary

When I came across this tape in my collection I did not remember buying it. I had read about Puce Mary but I didn’t think I owned any of her stuff but kudos to the Tripp from the past who bought this. She was a smart lady.

Great, mesmerizing noise album.

An Attempt to Deal With Tragedy

A bunch of people in the DIY community, under the organization of Ryan from _Entrancer donated songs to a compilation benefiting those musicians affected by the Ghostship fire in Oakland! There’s an old, old live collaboration by Frozen Body, Zach Spener (AKA Vice Reversa) and me on it, hasn’t been available since 2006 or something and was only released in an edition of 15 handmade wooden boxes w/CD-R on StarShipStereo!

I put my short film on Youtube so some friends outside the U.S.A. could see it and now, I’m going to take it down till the Fall of 2017.

I made the film so I could tour around and show it which is what I’m going to try and do again this Winter and Spring.

First showing will be in the Los Angeles area in January or February.

If you’re interested in showing it in your area, send me a letter:

Intense Music Nerd Recommendation (Flutes and Moby Dick)

Not for the weak at heart: Flute Puns.

I’ve known Kyle Mabson and Jonathan Snipes for so long I can’t really remember how we first meet and became friends. Jonathan ran the crazy band Captain Ahab and now is in clipping. While I have no idea what Kyle exactly does, other than play in a lot of bands and make a lot of music (he released a great hip-hop album this year, check it out!) and travel around with famous rock bands. Either way, he and Jonathan had been threatening for years to release an all flute album.

Yesterday they finally did!

Also, many years ago my friend Lee Sanders and I dedicated a lot of time to getting drunk and making an unabridged audiobook of Moby Dick. A few years back I put some of the chapters online. I’m about to finish digitizing all of the chapters but I haven’t been able to find a place to put them up on the Internet. If you have any suggestions, shoot me a message. Its almost 30 hours of audio, way too big for bandcamp or soundcloud.

You can listen to the first couple of chapters here!

New Short Film Coming End of December, A Music Recommendation

My new short film will be appearing at the online music fest, Bummeroo 3 at the end of December. Expect something crazy!

Also, I’ve been really geeking out hard to James Ferraro‘s classical album from this summer, Human Story 3. I’ve been following him since his noise band Sk8ters began, real prolific and diverse composer with some really neat ideas. Grab a cup of tea, curl up with a good book and listen to his ideas about modern society……

A Tale About Last Night

I got home a little after 11:39PM last night from an especially good Cutie Eyeball’s practice, made some dinner and got to bed around 1AM. Around 3:40AM I was waken by one of my (white) neighbors yelling “Go get them n*gga’s!” over and over again in the hallway outside my apartment.

This neighbor works nights and a few times a year I’ve just tolerated his late night loud discussions, dance parties and drunken rants. Usually it’s not so bad and I can fall asleep after he quiets down but not this morning…

I laid in my warm bed till almost 4AM and just couldn’t take the yelling anymore. I got up, threw some shoes on and walked out into the hallway. I was surprised by the loaves of bread my neighbor had ripped up and thrown all over the hallway. I paused at this and stood staring in disbelief for a little while.

I walked over to my neighbors apartment banged on the door as hard as I could.

“What’s up?” My neighbor asked when you opened the door.

“You gotta be quiet. I’m trying to sleep.” I told him.

“What?” He replied.

“You’ve got to be quiet, I need to sleep.” I told him.

Suddenly, a bald dude appeared behind my neighbor. “It’s okay dude, we’ll be quiet.” He blurted out.

“No!” My neighbor yelled.

“We’ll be quiet…don’t worry.” Bald dude said again.

“If you don’t shut up I’m going to call the cops!” I said, which was something I really didn’t want to do but I thought it’d quiet them down.

“Go ahead, call the cops!” My neighbor told me.

“Okay….” I replied and went back to my apartment and called 911.

As I talked to the operator, bald dude must have calmed my neighbor down cause sometime during my conversation the noise in the hallway ceased. In the end, I asked the operator not to send the police and then tried to go back to sleep at 4:10AM.

That didn’t work, and I laid in my bed looking at the ceiling until 6:00AM when bald dude and my neighbor had some fight and bald dude stormed out of the building.

My neighbor then proceeded to sit in the hallway and ramble on about his problems to every one of my neighbors leaving the building for work this morning.

At 6:55AM I got to listen to this conversation between my neighbor and a lady who lives one floor above me:

Neighbor: You know, I’m not going to lie to you cause I don’t tell lies. I’m high on heroin, some meth and ecstasy right now.

Lady: Oh….maybe you should get some help.

Neighbor: Are you gay?

Lady: I’m sorry, what?

Neighbor: Oh, wait…you’re not gay. I’ve seen you with your cute boyfriend.

Lady: Yeah.

Neighbor: I’m gay.

Lady: Good for you.

Neighbor: I’m an artist. A beautiful painter….

Lady: Oh wow, that’s neat.

Neighbor: I don’t tell any lies. I always tell the truth.

Lady: That’s great. Listen, I’ve got to get to….

I have no idea how she escaped the conversation cause I just couldn’t take it anymore and hopped in the shower to get ready for work.

What a shitty evening, thanks neighbor!

UPDATE: I tried to give that neighbor a pamphlet for Narcotics Anonymous meeting around town last night but he just thought I was insane, just like most drug addicts I’ve known.

Some (old) New Music

Put up one of my favorite demo’s I made a few years ago on some of my toy Casio keyboards (specifically, the SK-5, SK-1 and SA-5). There’s a few mistakes in the track, some volume issues (toy Casio keyboards have some volume issues when recording them off the headphone jack since it’s a “hot” signal) and it could be shorter but I’ve always thought it was an interesting track so I thought I’d share it.

Recorded in 2015 on my Tascam 424 mkiii (a cassette tape 4-Track).

I also put up a demo of a love song I wrote for my friends band, Hot White. I loved their band and the folks in it are just some of the best human beings I’ve had the pleasure to be friends with.

The song was made on my four track and it’s missing vocals since I needed one more track to record them but didn’t have it. Maybe I’ll rework it in the future now that I have an 8-track. Recorded in 2010 at Glob when I was going back to college to become a hottie accountant.
